Burlington Fire Responds to 'Steam, Not Smoke' Incident at Millcroft Golf Course
Fire crews have confirmed that the emissions at Millcroft Golf Course were a natural moisture release, not a fire, amid an ongoing investigation into the tree cutting.
BURLINGTON, ON — The Burlington Fire Department responded to multiple 911 calls on Sunday, June 15, 2025, reporting what appeared to be smoke coming from a pile of wood chips at the Millcroft Golf Course. However, fire crews confirmed that it was steam, not smoke.
In an emailed statement to The Field & Shutter Press on June 16, 2025, the City of Burlington Communications explained the phenomenon: “What was observed was steam—a natural by-product of moisture being released from decomposing organic material. While it may appear similar to smoke, it poses no fire risk or life safety concern.”
City officials reassured residents that the situation posed no risk to air quality or public safety.
The incident comes as the Millcroft Golf Course undergoes significant redevelopment, a project approved by the Ontario Land Tribunal. The redevelopment notably involved the clearing of over 400 trees, prompting an ongoing investigation by the City of Burlington and Environment and Climate Change Canada regarding the tree removal and potential impacts on nesting migratory birds.
