Each year, I like to take stock of the gear I carry, and since I usually get a few questions about what I use, I make it a habit to share a yearly update. Over time, my kit has evolved based on my needs in the field and the lessons I’ve learned along the way so here’s what I’m working with in 2025.
While I don’t always bring every piece of gear listed here on every outing, this is the core setup I rely on, with some variations depending on the situation.
Without further ado, let’s dive in!
Camera & Lenses
Fujifilm X-T20 & X-T2
The Fujifilm X Series, and the X-T20/X-T2, are fantastic cameras. The X-T series offers a more "analog" or "retro" workflow through the use of top mounted dials for shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation and an aperture ring on the lens.
Fujifilm XF 10-24mm f/4, OIS R WR
This is one of my favourite focal lengths, although not everyone's first pick, I really enjoy this focal length for woodland photography.
Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4.0 R LM OIS
A great all around lens.
Fujifilm XF 55-200mm F/3.5-4.8
Next to the 10-24, the 55-200 is my second favourite focal length. The ability to really zoom in and isolate specific details in nature is something I really enjoy.
Fujifilm XF 150-600mm F5.6-8 R LM OIS WR
My main wildlife lens, I primarily picked this up to begin wildlife photography, but I have used for some landscapes and plant life. A solidly built lens and also surprisingly light.
Tripod & Heads
IFOOTAGE TC7 Carbon Camera Tripod
Without a doubt, my favorite tripod to date. Having gone through many tripods starting out, I eventually stumbled across the TC7 thanks to a certain YouTuber, Thomas Heaton.
This tripod has a bowl head, meaning, instead of messing about leveling the tripod via the legs, you simply twist a center grip, and adjust the actual bowl. I find this much quicker and easier when paired with something other than a ball head. As if you're using a geared head, you simply level your tripod and you're good to go no matter the shot you're after.
Benro GD3WH 3-Way Geared Head
My primary tripod head. I prefer using a geared head for the accuracy and stability it provides. I much prefer being able to perfectly dial in my composition. This is especially true with my macro photography, where even minor adjustments can make all the difference.
Neewer GM101 Professional Gimbal
This was purchased with the sole intention of being a wildlife head. I really appreciate the range of motion and ease of use this gimbal offers, although a little on the heavy side, it has been a great bit of kit.
Backpacks
Shimoda Explore V1 - 60L
Hands down, without a doubt, my favorite camera bag to date. The Shimoda bags may be expensive, but they are definitely worth it. I won't be able to do this bag justice with just a few lines of text. I highly suggest checking out some reviews on YouTube!
Shimoda Action V2 - 30L
Owned for the same reasons as the Explore 60L. I utilize this bag primarily for day trips and smaller outings.
And thats everything that I primarily take with me out into the field!
